Flying Legends 2013

Flying Legends 2013 marked the end of an era. Stephen Grey, owner of TFC whose show it essentially is, marked bios final public display before stepping down from display flying.

Flying Legends 2011 – Piston Heaven

If you were to read some of the comments on the web about this years Flying Legends airshow, you would think it was a disaster and a poorly run show. It wasnt.
What it was, however, was the usual feast of sights and sounds that have built its reputation over the years. For a serious piston head it is a must do show.

Sadly there were a couple of incidents, if you put this many aircraft into the air at one time then there are bound to be. I am not qualified to comment on how or why they occurred, so I wont. All that matters is that the correct number of pilots were drinking beer in the pilots tent after the show.

It was my first visit for a few years as I have been out of the Country on the corresponding weekends, but it hasnt changed much. It doesnt need to. My words cant describe it so I will let the pictures do the talking. But suffice to say, 4 Rolls Royce Kestrel powered Hawker Biplanes in the air at the same time…….magic.

A tale of 3 images.

Part of the fun in digital photography from my point of view is editing the shots afterwards. For this blog I have chosen 3 images and processed them to produce a different effect on each image.

Mew Gull

Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF seen here taking off during the Sywell Airshow on 22nd August 2010. This iconic little aircraft now owned by the Real Aeroplane Company at Breighton in Yorkshire was taking part in a “mock” handicapped air race as part of the show. I really like this shot as it conveys the speed of the aircraft and it could have been taken at any time since it was built (airframe mods excepting). It illustrates the awful forwards view from the cockpit, the aircraft essentially being a flying fuel tank designed for flying from A to B as quickly as possible.

I have tried to wash out the shot as much as possible so that it has a period look. I’ve processed 2 more shots in slightly different ways

2010 a look back

I only started writing this blog in October, by then most of the airshow season had already finished.

Here then is a small selection of my favourite photos of the year before the Blog.
